Wedding photography pros versus friends with cameras

What is your opinion on this subject area? Do these people who have a decent camera have a place in the competitive world of photography. Much has been written recently about how these friends with cameras are ruining genuine photographers' businesses.
I do cover weddings and it is very hard work, extremely hard work. It is stressful and requires much preparation and meetings with the bride and groom and that is before you get started with the photography.
Many of these decent camera owners can take decent pictures but do the have the experience and know how that is required to produce the finished package. I tend to think not.

The other side of the coin is that people just haven't got the money these days and they have to carefully budget and focus on what is most important to them for their special day.

We as professionals can start to drop our prices but I believe this is wrong. There are still many many customers out there who appreciate that this is a special one off occasion and know the value of having it recorded professionally. They will choose a pro over a friend.

How committed can these friend be?

We will just have to weather the storm and offer the best services and packages without charging the earth for them.

We have the experience and portfolios that the friends do not have.

Yes they can steal work from us but will the customer be satisfied with the end product.  It is up to the pros to sell themselves and their products and win the deal.

What shots are parents asking for.

Hello.

Here are some recent edited shots parents have chosen.

What do you think?

Pretty varied but the day of the old school photo has certainly passed.

Bold colours are definitely the new black.

Introducing MMPhotography

Hi Lance here.

So my first blog begins.

Working hard at MMPhotography. So much editing to do after the numerous studio shoots.

We have two large studios based in Chesterfield Derbyshire, England.

Most of my work is studio based but I have recently bowed to the numerous requests for wedding shoots.

What I need to know is should I hire out the studios. We have a pretty typical main studio and a second one that has a catwalk facility within it.

To date I have not considered this venture but I am often not able to accomodate all requests for shoots so perhaps these customers could be referred on to another local photographer who, needed could use our great facilities.

Maybe it is an option.

Very stresed at moment as I have just moved house. Don't know whether I am on my feet or my head.

However photography keeps my sane, escapism at its best.

Blog soon
